The gassing of enemy combatants in the first world war conjures disturbing images in our psyche. For those lucky enough to survive, the image of a mounted lancer approaching to perforate corpses and ensure death adds another level of indescribable fear to the misery of the moment.
Acrylic on Canvas
30” x 40”
This image came from a small faded sepia polaroid of my stepfather in Vietnam that lived in a letterbox I’ve carried since I left for college in 1998. The image is more than a homage to a man I admire, who’s pain and life I’ve only begun to understand. The painting is about war, angles, texture, lighting, and focus, all fighting for your attention. This image of my hero asks for understanding, not sympathy.
